Teen gets 50 years in bakery worker’s death

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A man convicted of killing a mother of four working in a bakery when he was 16 years old has been ordered to spend 50 years in prison.

Local media outlets reported that Circuit Judge Robert Hood handed down the sentence Friday after a hearing for Trenton Barnes. The 17-year-old was convicted of murder in November.

Prosecutors say Barnes and 20-year-old Lorenzo Young wanted to rob a bar in July 2013, but it was closed, so they entered the bakery next door. Authorities say 33-year-old Kelly Hunnewell fought back and was shot in the throat, while the men left with nothing.

Young was convicted of murder at the same trial and was sentenced to life.

Barnes’ brother, Troy Stevenson, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial.
