Lawyers’ fees on hold in SC gay marriage cases

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Requests for thousands of dollars in legal fees from attorneys who argued to overturn South Carolina’s ban on gay marriages are on hold as same-sex marriages continue.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, has combined and delayed the two main gay marriage cases from the state pending developments at the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 4th Circuit includes South Carolina and has overturned gay marriage bans. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati has upheld such bans in four other states.

Attorneys for a Charleston couple who sued to be married want $153,000 in legal fees. Attorneys in a Columbia case also want legal fees.
