University of South Carolina sends advocates to Statehouse

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Some 225 advocates for the University of South Carolina are converging on the Statehouse in Columbia for their annual meetings with lawmakers.

University spokeswoman Peggy Binette says the group includes alumni, students and higher education supporters.

Binette says they are discussing keeping higher education affordable and the role education plays in supporting the state’s workforce during their visits on Wednesday. Their sessions include information about the university’s eight campuses around the state.

Attendees include University President Harris Pastides and USC Alumni Association President Paula Harper Bethea. Athletics Director Ray Tanner is speaking with the advocates at a Capital City Club lunch at noon.
