House majority leader says 2 plans to fix SC roads upcoming
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — House Majority Leader Bruce Bannister says two different plans to get more money to South Carolina roads will be introduced this week.
House Republicans met behind closed for 90 minutes on Tuesday. Gov. Nikki Haley stopped by the meeting to promote her plan to increase the state’s gas tax by 10 cents and reduce income tax rates by 2 percentage points over 10 years.
Bannister says the governor’s proposal will be introduced Wednesday along with a special House committee’s plan that would cut the gas tax while adding a sales tax on fuel. Both plans would raise about $400 million a year for roads.
Bannister says lawmakers are still a long way from any solutions because the Senate has yet to weigh in.
