SCE&G giving away free tree seedlings for Lake Murray shore

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. is again giving away free trees as part of an effort to promote improvement of the shoreline on Lake Murray.
On Friday and Saturday, free seedlings are available to lake residents at the SCE&G Environmental Building on the north side of the Lake Murray Dam.
SCE&G says the collaborative effort is designed to improve the aesthetics of the lake’s shoreline, help control erosion and protect water quality. It also helps re-establish vegetation along the shoreline and enhance the fish habitat.
The seedlings are being distributed in bundles of 10 and 15 trees and come with planting instructions. Trees available this year include cypress bald, river birch, button bushes and Southern wax myrtles.
