10-year-old student brings gun to Sumter elementary school

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say they don’t plan criminal charges against a 10-year-old student who had a gun in a book bag at a Sumter County elementary school.

Police told The Sumter Item (http://bit.ly/1EbqQI5 ) that they were called to Lemira Elementary School on Thursday by an assistant principal, who found the gun after another student reported the weapon to a teacher.

Authorities say the student never showed the gun to anyone, and there is no reason to think the student intended to harm anyone.

School officials sent a note home Friday about the gun and said the student will be disciplined through the school system.
