Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — A winter weather mix of snow and frozen rain makes for a wet and cautious commute across the Midlands Tuesday. “Whenever we see the slightest bit of precipitation, even rain outside, not just ice or snow, we see that our collisions increase,” said Lance Corporal David Jones. While several inches of snow fell in the Upstate, highway patrol officials said the less severe weather here in the midlands helped driving conditions. “I’ve seen snow and ice accumulate, especially on trees and some power-lines but again here in the midlands, the roadways are in good condition,” said Jones. However, for an area that doesn’t experience much winter weather, Lance Corporal Jones cautioned drivers to remain mindful of black ice at night when the temperatures begin to drop. “Never slam your breaks really hard, always counter steer, foot off the gas and if sliding to right, counter steer to the left. there’s going to be a few shaded areas where the suns not hitting to thaw the ice so be mindful when traveling,” he said. With predictions of more winter weather expected to hit the midlands this week, drivers traveling say they are ready to say goodbye to winter. I’m southern and i’m ready for sunshine,” said Chris White. “I have for a longtime been ready for winter to be over,” said Dewitt Burleson. The wait for winter to end, only 26 days until spring.
