Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — With a ten to one vote, a bill to remove the board of trustees at South Carolina State University is heading to the senate floor. “It’s too important, we need to have this uncomfortable conversation, we need to have it on the floor,” said Senator Harvey Peeler. The bill calls for the current board to be replaced by 5-new members appointed by a group of lawmakers, including the Governor. In addition, appointees must have experience in finance, higher education, and business or public administration. “We are talking about a 5 person board that develops policy, who hires and fires a president who implements policy,” said Senator Nikki Setzler. Several members of the senate panel support the bill citing an urgency to help SC State get back on it’s feet. “Everyday we wait is another day students are dropping out of South Carolina State looking to go other places,” said Senator Darrell Jackson. However, others are cautious to act too hastily. Senator Malloy cast the only ‘no’ vote saying he wants to look at all the options and alternatives, including giving alumni a say in the matter. “This university has produced great individuals here in this state and they need a voice at this table,” said Senator Gerald Malloy. Senator Malloy also made a recommendation to add two spots on the board for alumni. However, ultimately the committee voted to take the bill to the floor for further discussion. If passed by the Senate, the new board will serve for 3 years.
