Man charged in hit and run death of DOT worker

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A man has been charged in the hit and run death of a South Carolina Department of Transportation worker.

Richland County deputies say 59-year-old Ray Pickett turned himself in on Saturday. He has been charged with hit and run resulting in death.

The Highway Patrol says a DOT worker was with a crew patching up potholes on Farrow Road over Interstate 77 at around 8:30 p.m. Friday when a 1984 Ford truck hit the worker, then a DOT truck.

Coroner Gary Watts says 56-year-old Paul Lewis Fee later died at the hospital.

Authorities say Pickett ran away from the scene. He was in jail Sunday, and it wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney.
