Wharton Joins Spurrier’s Coaching Staff

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Jon Hoke isn’t the only new coach to join Steve Spurrier this offseason. Wednesday, Spurrier announced the hiring of former Gamecock and Panthers offensive lineman Travelle Wharton as a new USC offensive line quality control coach. Wharton, a Simpsonville, S.C. native, was a standout left tackle at USC from 2000-2003 and was a longtime anchor of the Carolina Panthers offensive line during his 11-year NFL career that ended in 2013. Spurrier added former Florida defensive coordinator Hoke last month. Hoke, an NFL assistant for the last decade most recently coaching the Chicago Bears secondary, will be USC’s co-defensive coordinator this season with Lorenzo Ward. The Gamecocks started spring practice Tuesday.
