Exclusive SC resort awaiting regulatory approval for seawall

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — An exclusive South Carolina resort is awaiting regulatory approval to build a new seawall to protect homes after the legislature agreed to the plan last year.
The State newspaper in Columbia reported (http://bit.ly/1DBVFd5) legislators approved the seawall for the gated community south of Myrtle Beach even though the structures have been banned for 27 years.
The seawall at Debordieu would protect a small row of houses that’s threatened by rising seas and big waves. Landowners say part of an existing wooden seawall needs to be replaced.
Last week, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control said the public has until May 1 to comment on a permit application for the new wooden wall.
Seawalls and buildings worsen beach erosion when pounded by the ocean.
