Columbia, S. C. (WOLO) — Reaction to the shooting death in North Charleston continued to pour in on Wednesday from state and local leaders. The shocking acts of a North Charleston Police Officer caught on camera, show the officer fatally shooting 50-year old Walter Scott as he tries to runaway. “I thought it was really shocking and it was really sad to see,” said Kim Powers. “When I saw the video, it was sad and it could’ve been handled in a totally different manner,” said Eddie Cokley. US Senator Tim Scott agreed. Turning to twitter he said, “It is clear the killing of #WalterScott was unnecessary and avoidable; my prayers are with the Scott Family as they go through this ordeal.” In a statement released by Attorney General Alan Wilson he states; “This is a very difficult and emotional time for our state. I have already spoken with Chief Mark Keel and Solicitor Scarlett Wilson on this matter and I am very confident that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will conduct a very thorough and fair investigation and that Solicitor Wilson’s office will uphold the rule of law. Our office is always available to assist if we are needed.” Meanwhile, the South Carolina Republican party called the shooting of Walter Scott senseless and unacceptable, saying “Let’s stand together for justice and change, so that an unspeakable tragedy doesn’t happen again.” “There definitely needs to be a dialogue and a cultural change out there because obviously seeing these things happen over and over and over, it’s just not right,” said Kim Powers. “People just need to live and let live,” said Brigette McGowans. “I mean the war is over, you lost it’s time to move on and let this subculture of racism go, it’s poisonous, it’s not good for anybody, it’s just time to move on.” Governor Nikki Haley and Senator Lindsey Graham also released statements on the incident.
