Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — An historic aircraft has landed in Columbia. A DC-3 plane from the 1940’s stopped at Bell Aviation to provide passengers with some history. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary plane, but step inside and it’s a cabin full of history. “It’s more than aluminum and fabric, it has served people well and faithful,” said Dwayne King, Director of Kingdom Air Corps. Built in the 1940’s, the DC-3 airplane is decked out with decade old engines and inclined seating. The plane was commissioned by the Navy to help train pilots for the war. While it never saw active duty, others just like it did. After serving it’s duty in the military, the plane was used commercially and now, 70 years later it’s getting ready to fly from Columbia to Alaska and on to Russia to commemorate the victory of WWII and honor veterans. “The Russian government asked me to do this flight and take the aircraft all the way to central Siberia its never been done since the war and we are attempting to do that,” said King. When this plane is not crossing the Pacific to Russia, it’s based here in the United States serving another mission with the Kingdom Air Corp in Alaska. “We serve mission organizations in Alaska, Alaska has very few roads to most of the population in Alaska lives off the road system, so any missionaries that go out there have to have air transportation,” said King. The plane will stay in Columbia until April 25 before heading across country.
