Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — Former Texas Governor Rick Perry visited South Carolina Friday. He told ABC Columbia News a decision on a 2016 Presidential run will be decided next month. “I‘ll make an announcement of my intentions around the 1st of June, so we‘re about 30 days out from allowing that to be public of what were planning to do,” Perry said. With South Carolina the first in the south to hold a primary, what makes this state such a key state? “South Carolina’s an important state because I think it really reflects, as does Texas, what can happen with the right kind of leadership,” explained Perry. “You put the right tax and regulatory climate into place and you can have a state that will really take off economically, and that’s what we need to see for this country. We need a leader who has the executive experience of leading and making executive decisions and that experience is priceless from my perspective.” When asked what it will take for a Republican candidate to win the 2016 election, he said it will come down to a solid vision for the future of the United States. “I think the future of this country is going to be discussed and who lays out a positive vision and who is it thats going to be out there and say the best years are in front of this country and heres why thats the case,” Perry said. “I think certainly I‘m in that camp of laying out the positive things that can happen in this country with empowering the states to compete against each other, creating the wealth and the jobs, economically getting this country back on track and it can actually happen rather quickly. I think that we‘re just a couple of good decisions and a leadership change at the top away from the best years this countrys ever had.” How do we go about creating more jobs? “I think it’s really tied to the energy policy in this country, I mean the President vetoed the XL pipeline that would‘ve created a lot of jobs just in the building of the pipeline, not to mention then that America becomes more energy secure, you use all of our energy resources I mean North American energy, Canada, the United States, Mexico all of that energy, known reserves more than Russia and Saudi Arabia,” Perry said. “The right policies put into place and I think really focused on energy policy in this country not only will it create a lot of jobs it will make America energy secure which is very, very important. I’d rather be getting our energy from Canada, the United States, and Mexico than Venezuela or some Middle Eastern country that doesn‘t have Americas interest in mind.” Perry also weighed in on the national issues surrounding police brutality and body cameras and what it will take to improve relations between law enforcement officials and the people of the United States. “I think it’s important for us to have a conversation in this country about the rule of law, about the peaceful protest is one thing, crossing the line where you put law enforcement or other individuals lives in jeopardy or private property in jeopardy then at that particular point in time that has to be addressed as well,” Perry said. “I think the symptoms that we see and being able to address those symptoms is important for us to have the conversation.”
