Boat safety tips for Memorial Day weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — With the weather looking wonderful for the extended holiday weekend, you can expect plenty of people will be hitting the water. It’s probably why officials have designated this week Safe Boating Week. The National Weather Service is currently partnering with the National Safe Boating Council to promote what they’re calling “smart” practices. Forecasters are putting out a public information statement and broadcast public service announcements on “NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards.” There are also some tips that you can follow to keep you and your family safe. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says: -Make sure life-saving devices on the boat are in good condition -Carry a cell phone, if possible -Don’t operate a boat under the influence -If you’re boat does capsize, stay with it
