Welch Waived By Chicago Sky

Aleighsa Welch’s pro basketball career is taking an early detour. Wednesday the Chicago Sky waived the former Gamecock who helped get USC to its first ever Final Four. Last month, the Sky made Welch the 22nd overall WNBA draft pick. After six training camp practices, Chicago determined the 6-foot Welch wasn’t going to factor into their plans at power forward. Sky coach Pokey Chatman says Welch is more suited as a small forward in the WNBA. Welch addressed the situation on Facebook: “Chicago didn‘t work out the way I had hoped, but the road definitely doesn‘t end here. I thank the organization for the opportunity. Anybody who knows me knows that no matter the setback, I will always come back. Can‘t wait to get back to Columbia and Charleston to begin giving back to the people that gave so much to me over the years. Those communities have molded me – it‘s only right that I extend myself back in return. Even disappointments can be blessings in disguise!”
