Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — According to AAA, close to half a million South Carolinians will be hitting the road over memorial day weekend. With sunny skies and mild traffic along interstate 20, travelers hit the road early Friday morning to kick off Memorial Day Weekend. “We gave ourselves about an hour and half extra for stopping incase traffic got bad,” said Nancy Garrison, who was on her way to Myrtle Beach. “It‘s busier, it‘ll get worse this afternoon that‘s why i‘m getting there early,” explained David Parker, also headed to Myrtle Beach. With AAA estimating nearly half a million South Carolina motorists traveling this holiday weekend, drivers said they are taking extra pre-cautions on the road. “You have to pay attention to everything, you have to leave at least a half a mile ahead to look for the brake light so you can pay attention to what’s going on, so you don‘t run into anything,” said motorcyclist Raderick Woods. “Just watch for other drivers, try to stay the speed limit and watch for cops,” added Jamika Lamb on her way to Myrtle Beach. Watching for cops this weekend is a smart idea. State Highway officials said drivers can expect to see more checkpoints this weekend, focusing on DUI’s, seatbelt checks, speeding, and distracted driving. Motorists said their presence was already felt Friday morning. “I’ve been trying to watch my cruise control so I don’t accidentally get too fast because I’ve seen a lot of troopers,” said Garrison. Officials also remind travelers to be aware of motorcyclists and it’s a good idea to inspect your vehicle before going on a long road trip.
