Big crowds turned out for two republican heavyweights in downtown columbia Tuesday. Former Governor Mike Huckabee is running for president, while New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has yet to officially announce. In separate events Tuesday night in downtown Columbia, both politicians emphasized the country’s need for a governor to take over the Oval Office. “We have a dysfunctional government because we don’t have people with the actual experience of knowing how to lead and govern,” Huckabee says. “The best presidents know how to do it,” Christie says. “They know how to lead and then make a deal and take a deal off the table.” Christie has served as New Jersey’s governor for almost six years. Huckabee led Arkansas for more than a decade. “I was an incredibly effective governor in a state overwhelmed by the democratic party,” Huckabee says. Christie has also faced a predominately Democratic legislature. “There’s not a day I wake up where I think the legislature wakes up and says, ‘hey let’s see what the governor wants and lets give it to him.'” Christie says he will decide whether he’s running by the end of the month.
