WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — It’s a question without an easy answer. What do you want to do before you die? For Columbia artist Karl L. Larsen, the answer lay with the question itself. “To install the largest ‘before I die’ wall in the world,” Larsen says. The artist, with West Columbia business owner Mike Plessenger, took the desire to the West Columbia City Council, which saw the proposal as an opportunity to engage community members. The ‘Before I Die’ wall started in New Orleans in 2011. Since then, the idea has spread around the world. The concept is simple; give people the space to express their private hopes and dreams. On a larger scale, Larsen and Plessenger see it as a chance to start a conversation about public art. The wall will go up along the West Columbia Riverwalk the first week of August. It will come down 30 days later. For more information about the global project, visit beforeidie.cc.
