Summerville, S.C. — John McKissick, who served as Summerville High School’s football coach since 1952, is retiring from coaching. McKissick held a press conference Tuesday to announce his retirement. “This is a hard time,” said McKissick with tears in his eyes. “I’ve had a great life here in Summerville. I don’t think anybody has had a better life as far as enjoying it.” McKissick, 88, has won 620 games, more than any football coach at any level. He was named the National Coach of the Year in 1980; was named to the 1990 National High School Sports Hall of Fame; and in his tenure at Summerville, he won 10 state championships. McKissick made the decision with his wife this year. He said Tuesday that his age was the overriding factor in his decision to retire. “I think my age is catching up with me,” said McKissick Tuesday. “If I didn’t know how old I was, I’d probably be in the 40’s. But I’m approaching 89 here pretty soon, so that’s a long life.” His grandson, Joe Call, will take over as head coach of the Green Wave next season. Video courtesy: WCIV Sports
