COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Hundreds gathered in front of the South Carolina State House Saturday night, to call for the Confederate flag to be taken down. The event, hosted by the SC Progressive Network, drew a crowd, though, things remained peaceful, as community members called for change. “I’m a South Carolinian, born and raised, but that flag is truly a stain,” said one onlooker. Another drove from Savannah, GA to take part in the rally. He says those people who say the flag is part of our heritage need to go back to the history books. “Racism still exists, hatred still exists and we definitely need to fight it now,” he says. People held signs reading, ‘take it down’, and ‘honk to take it down.’ Drivers could be heard giving their approval well after the sun set Saturday night. Republican Representative Doug Brannon has announced intentions to introduce a bill moving the flag to the state’s Confederate Relic Room after December. He joins House Minority Leader Democrat Todd Rutherford.
