Exhibit about WWI trench maps opens at military museum

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — An exhibit about World War I trench maps has opened at the S.C. Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.

The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/1FrgYZ9) that 19 original maps from WWI are part of the exhibit titled “Trench Maps: Military Cartography on the Western Front, 1914-1918.”

The exhibit focuses on why trench maps were so vital to troops. In addition to the maps, artifacts also include artillery ammunition, field equipment, a French artillery uniform and photographs.

University of South Carolina archaeologist James Legg curated the exhibit. He describes the trenches as “a remarkable negative achievement on the part of western civilization.”

The exhibit opened Friday and continues through Jan. 3.
