Confederate battle flag removed from SC dome now in museum

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Confederate battle flag that once flew atop South Carolina’s Statehouse dome and was taken down 15 years ago is now on display at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia.

Museum spokeswoman Anna Kate Twitty said the flag is displayed in its Civil War exhibit. Twitty said state law governed the removal of the flag from the dome, and designated the museum as its recipient.

According to Twitty, the museum got three Confederate flags from the Statehouse: the last one to fly atop the dome and two others that were displayed in the House and Senate chambers.

A separate museum next door to the State Museum is known as the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, but that is not where the dome flag was sent.
