Man killed while crossing I-77 northbound identified

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the individual who died yesterday evening at approximately 7:30 p.m. while crossing I-77 northbound at mile marker #8. John Herman Phelps, date of birth 10/18/1936, of Fort Myers, Florida, died as a result of injuries he received when he exited his vehicle and attempted to cross the interstate to check on the passengers in a vehicle that had been involved in an earlier collision. Mr. Myers was struck by a vehicle and died at the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The incident had multiple lanes in that stretch of I-77 closed for several hours Saturday night.
