COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — A North Carolina woman charged with defacing a monument after removing the Confederate flag flying in front of the S.C. State House is out of jail. The S.C. Department of Public Safety says she was arrested right away. Tom Dawson saw it happen. “i actually thought it was the official coming down of the flag,” he says. 30-year-old Brittany “Bree” Newsome and 30-year-old James Tyson, also from North Carolina, were arrested. Tyson was inside the wrought iron fence surrounding the monument say police. They’re charged with defacing a monument, a misdemeanor in South Carolina. The crime comes with up to three years in prison, and, or, a $5,000 fine. Newsome and Tyson were taken to the Alvin Glenn Detention Center, where they have since been released. Each posted the $300 required of their $3,000 bonds. S.C Representative Todd Rutherford is Newsome’s attorney. “i was contacted by people who are close to the family,” he told ABC Columbia Saturday afternoon after Newsome’s bond hearing. Newsome and Tyson are scheduled to appear in court at the end of July. “Honestly, I hope we can get this resolved before then,” Tyson’s attorney, Mark Schnee, says. The flag was replaced just as quickly as it was taken down. SCDPS says a new one was flying within an hour. The two are out of jail now.
