SC counties to receive between $2M and $18M for road repair
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The state budget is expected to provide South Carolina’s counties between $2 million and $18 million each this year for road repair.
The budget that took effect Wednesday will distribute an estimated $216 million of surplus revenue to counties for road repair. That money must be spent on secondary state roads.
That’s in addition to the $71 million counties will receive through their nearly 3-cents share of the state gas tax. Local officials get more leeway with that money. Counties’ share of the two sources is based on population, land area and road miles.
Fourteen counties with high gas-tax collections split an additional $10 million.
A spreadsheet provided Wednesday by Senate Finance shows counties’ collective share ranges from $2.2 million for Allendale County to nearly $18 million to Greenville County.
