Columbia, S.C. (WOLO)– Thousands gathered at the State House Friday morning as the confederate flag that flew in front of the capitol for 15 years was taken down. Governor Nikki Haley signed the bill to remove the flag Thursday, 22 days after admitted white supremacist and confessed shooter Dylann Roof entered Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and killed nine people including Senator Clementa Pinckney. “If there is ever a time to say I’m proud to say I’m from South Carolina, it’s today,” said Tangee Brice Jacobs who attended the ceremony. It was an emotional and historic day in South Carolina as thousands endured the Columbia heat to see the Confederate flag officially come down. “Words can not even begin to describe it,” said Phyllis Lloyd Harris. “It was such a moving moment to see that flag come down.” From a sea of people flooding the State House grounds, cheers and chants echoed in downtown Columbia. While on the State House steps, celebrations from leaders and lawmakers after weeks of calling for its removal. “It’s just kind of an unspeakable joy, you just kind of internalize and sink it in,” said Reverend Jesse Jackson. The flag will now be placed in a display in the Confederate Relic Room just blocks from the state house.
