Columbia S.C. (WOLO)– Immediately following its removal, the Confederate Flag was transported in an armored SLED vehicle to the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room where it will be displayed. According to Museum Director Alan Roberson, the museum is taking the responsibility of preserving the flag very seriously. After more than 50 years flying on Statehouse all traces of the Confederate flag were removed today in less than 5 hours. Amid tears and joyful celebration of the flag’s removal… Darla Davenport-Powell says, “I’m so excited about this day because this is a new day in South Carolina’s history.” Was disappointment from those who consider the flag an essential part of their heritage. Brighton says, “You know it may not represent everybody that lives in South Carolina but it represents South Carolina history.” This is something Roberson, Director of the South Carolina Relic Room says he’ll keep in mind. Roberson tells ABC Columbia, “We’ll take this and see how we can properly present it to make the people who care so much about this flag feel a little bit better about it coming down from the Statehouse.” Now safely in it’s new home at the Relic Room, Roberson assures that the flag is being well taken care of. Roberson says, “It is here, we brought it in the side entrance near our collections storage area, it was repackaged, put in a box with acid free tissue packed and layered in a very large box and then taken into our collections storage area and locked down and alarmed. According to Roberson it could be a year or more before the Flag is put on display as the museum has yet to decide how and where it will be placed. “We’ll probably go towards some sort of memorial for the 21,000 South Carolinans that died in the American Civil War,” says Roberson. And Those upset about the flag’s removal say if it can’t be flying at the capital this might just be the next best thing. Brighton says, “I’d say, you know for safe keeping. You know I’d rather see it on display but for safe keeping I do agree that’s an excellent place to put it.”
