“Tomatoes are sort of our symbol for local food here, it’s something everyone recognizes,” says Genevieve Taylor of Sustainable Midlands. If home grown tomatoes are what you’re looking for Saturday’s Tasty Tomato fest is where you’ll want to be. From sandwiches to bloody marys this festival will feature any and everything tomato. “Heirloom tomatoes, the white giant, the German johnson, a cherokee purple, an orange kellog, a carbon, says Taylor.” But this festival is more than just an ode to the round red fruit, it’s a celebration of all Midland grown produce. According to Taylor,”When you’re eating and buying local, you’re eating more healthy” Genevieve tells ABC Columbia that buying locally grown produce isn’t just good for your body, it’s important to providing a sustainable local economy. “When you’re eating and buying local you’re reinvesting in the community that you live in and in the people. So, you’re reinvesting in yourself, the community and the people that live there and it just builds a much more vibrant community,”says Taylor. So if you’re looking to explore Midland grown food options or just want to enjoy a tasty tomato, Sustainable Midland’s festival provides the perfect chance. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to really taste what it’s like to be here in South Carolina,” says Taylor. The Tasty Tomato Festival will be held this Saturday from 4 until 9 at City Roots Farm. Tickets are available online and at the entrance.
