Deputies arrest person of interest in Holly Hill deaths

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a person of interest in the deaths of four people in rural South Carolina earlier this month.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Thursday that 26-year-old Michael Smith of Moncks Corner was arrested this week after a chase where speeds reached more than 100 mph.

The statement said Prosecutor David Pascoe told a magistrate that Smith is a person of interest but is not a suspect in the deaths of a man, woman and two teens at a house in Holly Hill on July 15.

Smith was charged with failure to stop for police and possession of a controlled substance as a result of Tuesday’s chase.

Smith is the third person arrested in the investigation. No one has been charged with the deaths.
