Girls Rock Columbia campers show off skills, confidence

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Girls Rock Columbia, a one week long summer camp using music education to empower young girls and women, hosted their third annual summer camp showcase Saturday. The showcase gave 57 campers the chance to show off the skills and confidence they learned at camp. Fourteen bands performed an original song the campers wrote during camp week. In addition to learning a traditional rock instrument and writing a song, campers also participated in band coaching, and workshops; self defense, Deconstructing Gender, Herstory of Women, Rock Photography, Body Positivity, She Techs for the Win, Audio Console mixing, improv and 4th Wave Zine Making. In its third year of operation, Girls Rock Columbia has more than tripled in size. Girls Rock Columbia is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a community of girls in Columbia and empowering them through music education. The program encourages an environment that cultivates self-confidence, challenges gender stereotypes, promotes positive female relationships, creativity, and leadership. The ultimate goal of Girls Rock Columbia is to empower everyone involved; both campers and volunteers, to take the sense of community learned from within the organization and carry that throughout the city they call home.
