Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, South Carolina has an extensive population of veterans who are chronically homeless. Organizations and service providers are teaming up with the V.A. to find housing solutions for the homeless. Cindy Davis, with the Department of Veteran Affairs says,”It’s actually our duty to help the veterans because they have given of themselves in various war times… they are in very difficult situations, a lot of them resulting from their service to their country.” One of those difficult situations plaguing veterans, homelessness. With 5 different transitional houses in the community the Department of Veteran Affairs is working to put a stop to veterans living on the streets. “We as a VA, our whole VA system, we want to try and end it at the end of this year. So I know we’re getting much closer and we are doing everything we can to work towards housing all of them,” says Davis. As an extension of this effort, the V.A. is partnering with United Way of the Midlands, Transitions and other service providers to host the second South Carolina Homefront for Veterans. According to Davis,”We are going to be prepared to house any of the veterans immediately in our houses, we have some beds available, we’ll also have our Dorn VA enrollment services will be there, we’ll also have our longer term housing program there.” Providing an opportunity for all vets to find a place to call home. “We do need to serve them and provide all the services that we can for them and that doesn’t end at the end of this year that is our pledge for the rest of their lives.” Homefront for Veterans is free for all vets and will be held on Wednesday at Transitions from 11-3.
