Spurrier, Hoke Focusing on Fundamental Defense
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Steve Spurrier has said it a million times in a million different ways: last season was just not fun to watch. But on Monday, when Gamecock players report for fall practice, the attention will be turned away from 2014 and on to 2015. Spurrier has spent much of the offseason making defensive changes from last year’s squad that ranked 105th in the nation against the rush and 92nd in total defense. Both Spurrier and new co-defensive coordinator Jon Hoke have echoed each other: USC’s defense must re-learn the fundamentals of playing defense, which Spurrier has said includes tackling in position and stronger at the line.
