South Carolina limiting number of death certificates issued

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The state of South Carolina has started limiting the number of death certificates that can be issued for each person to five.

The Post and Courier of Charleston (http://bit.ly/1VXCGA0 ) reports that the new limit has been in place since mid-July because a Harrison, Ohio-based company that made the paper, Sekuworks, unexpectedly closed in June.

Pamela Amos, general manager at McAlister-Smith Funeral Homes in Mount Pleasant, says the limit has been proving difficult for families, since many need more to settle various accounts.

Department of Health and Environmental Control spokesman Cassandra Harris says the state awarded a new contract for certificate paper on July 14 and will begin processing back orders soon.

The state’s death certificates are created on security paper that uses an anti-counterfeiting printing technique also used on currency.
