GOP Gov. Haley asks for review of SC’s 3 abortion clinics
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley has asked South Carolina’s public health agency to investigate the state’s three abortion clinics, concentrating on the one operated by Planned Parenthood.
Haley’s letter Tuesday makes her the latest Republican official to call for a review of abortion practices following the release of secretly taped videos that show Planned Parenthood officials elsewhere discussing the collection of fetal organs for research.
Three weeks ago, 26 House Republicans requested a review by the Legislative Audit Council. Ten senators submitted an identical request to the auditing agency Monday.
A regional Planned Parenthood official has said none of its clinics in the Carolinas participate in fetal tissue collection.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Environmental Control said the agency will promptly start an investigation.
