Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — This week, Governor Nikki Haley called for the investigation of abortion clinics in South Carolina. Governor Haley is the latest Republican to call for an investigation of abortion clinics several weeks after an anti-abortion group released controversial videos. The Governor said her call for action is not politically motivated but rather a move to make sure South Carolina clinics are operating at the highest standard. “This is not an attack on any organization this is making sure that all is above board in South Carolina,” said Governor Haley. Governor Haley is taking a proactive approach to make sure abortion clinics in South Carolina are performing ethically. The Governor is asking DHEC to investigate 3 abortion clinics in the state, including one run by Planned Parenthood. The call for action comes after videos released by an anti-abortion group showed Planned Parenthood officials talking about the collection of fetal organs for research. “It’s hard to look at those videos and not have it completely turn your stomach and so that‘s the thing, we want to make sure nothing like that is happening in South Carolina,” explained Governor Haley. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is defending it‘s practices. In a statement their spokesperson stated “Planned Parenthood South Atlantic follows all laws and has the highest medical and ethical standards” and added “These political attacks claiming that Planned Parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation are simply not true.” Planned Parenthood South Atlantic officials said they do not participate in tissue donation programs and called the Governor‘s request for investigation‘s “about political grandstanding, not facts.” However, the Governor argued this is not part of any political agenda. “If you look at the values of South Carolina it doesn‘t in any way relate to the videos, whether the videos are true or not it is just in our best interest to go back and look and make sure that everything is above board,” said Governor Haley. DHEC says they will act promptly in starting it’s investigations.
