Gamecocks Tie Winthrop 1-1 in Exhibition Match

COLUMBIA, S.C. (USC SID) — South Carolina claimed a tie in its second exhibition of the 2015 season with a 1-1 draw against Winthrop on Wednesday evening at Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks put up seven shots in the final of the three 30-minute periods, making good runs that put the pressure on the Eagles. On one such run in the 83rd minute, junior Koty Millard got fouled inside the 18-yard box, bringing the penalty kick. Senior Devin L‘Amoreaux stepped to the spot and put one into the net to knot the match at 1-1. Winthrop took the initial lead in the 11th minute when Jordi Lluch redirected the secondary effort by Marco Gatzke into the goal after the Gamecocks thought they had cleared a corner kick. South Carolina closed strong, with a 7-1 advantage in shots in the third and a 3-0 lead in corner kicks. Game Changer: New players on the pitch and the never-say-die attitude paid off in the third when Millard drew the foul in the penalty area. Key Stat: South Carolina out-shot Winthrop 11-8 in the contest, helped by the 7-1 lead in the final stanza.
