COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO/AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley’s office says they “will absolutely draw the line,” with any plans to bring prisoners from Guantanamo to South Carolina. The governor held a 1 p.m. news conference Thursday at the State House to address the plans that the federal government has to look at the Naval Brig in Hanahan as an alternative location for Gitmo detainees being brought to the United States. “We will not allow any terrorists to come into South Carolina,” Haley said. “I will absolutely do everything I can to protect the people of SC, they don’t deserve this.” The Defense Department has said it will evaluate the brig as a potential site to house detainees as part of the Obama administration’s push to close the Guantanamo prison. Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, is also being considered. Haley said Thursday that evaluators are wasting their time. The Republican governor said moving the detainees to any state would violate federal law. On Wednesday, her predecessor, U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, wrote a letter to the Defense Department opposing the possibility. He says he’s concerned about moving detainees from a remote corner of Cuba to a prison near a school, homes and a port.
