Small earthquake detected near Summerville Sunday

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) — The United States Geological Survey detected a very slight earthquake near Summerville Sunday night. According to the USGS, the epicenter of the quake was 1 mile east of Summerville and four miles northwest of Ladson . The 2.1-magnitude quake might not have even been felt as it happened just before 11:30 p.m. The coordinates of the epicenter were reported as 33.017one space°N 80.163one space°W with a depth of 2.7 miles. College of Charleston Associated Professor of Geology Dr. Erin Beutel has said in the past that the number of quakes experienced in the area vary year by year and that there is no reason to think the small rumbles are leading up to a larger event.
