Deputies nix the razor for fallen officers
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Now through mid-October, some Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies will look a little rough around the edges. Deputies participating in two-month long fundraising event will be growing longer than normal facial hair in an effort to raise awareness of the Charlie Kubala Memorial Trust, a non-profit organization established by local law enforcement officers in 1996 shortly after the on-duty death of 13-year sheriff‘s office veteran Sgt. Charlie Kubala. Initially created to provide financial assistance for the children of Sgt. Kubala, the charity has since grown to aide children and spouses of area law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, and also provides several scholarships annually to local high school students. “Some of our deputies might not look as clean shaven as we prefer for the next few weeks, but if we can raise a few dollars for a good cause, then we can put off the razors for a little while,” said Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis. For these officers, the razors will come back out Oct. 12, the same day as the 20th annual Charlie Kubala Memorial Golf Tournament. If you are interested in sponsoring a hole for the tournament or competing in the event, visit the organization‘s website at www.KubalaGolf.com.
