Haley, KS Gov. against Guantanamo detainees

COLUMBIA , S.C. (AP/WOLO) — The governors of South Carolina and Kansas are warning the Obama administration they are ready to take action if detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, are brought to military installations in either state. In a letter dated Tuesday, Govs. Nikki Haley and Sam Brownback tell Defense Secretary Ash Carter they are prepared to take “any action within our power” to stop the transfers. Gov. Haley held a news conference at the State House on Aug. 20 to address the plans that the federal government has to look at the Naval Brig in Hanahan as an alternative location for Gitmo detainees being brought to the United States. “We will not allow any terrorists to come into South Carolina,” Haley said. “I will absolutely do everything I can to protect the people of SC, they don’t deserve this.” The Defense Department has said it will evaluate the brig as a potential site to house detainees as part of the Obama administration’s push to close the Guantanamo prison. Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, is also being considered. Stay with ABC Columbia for more details.
