Celebration planned to honor Chapin-Newberry AL Baseball Team

CHAPIN, S.C. (WOLO) — The Newberry and Chapin communities will host a celebration of the Chapin-Newberry American Legion baseball national championship team on September 6 at 4:00 pm in downtown Newberry at Memorial Park. Players and coaches will be saluted by leaders from Newberry and Chapin, plus the national championship trophy and banners will be displayed. After the ceremony, the American Legion baseball champions will be available for autographs. A limited number of souvenir baseballs and pictures will be available. “We’re so proud of the team and their great accomplishments” said Robert Livingston of American Legion Post 24. “This will be a fun, festive celebration, and we encourage people to come celebrate with the team.” On September 7, the Chapin-Newberry team will be in the Chapin Labor Day Parade, riding with American Legion members and World War II veterans. The parade starts at 9:30 am. Chapin-Newberry defeated Louisiana 9-2 to win the national championship, becoming the first team from South Carolina to win the American Legion championship since Spartanburg in 1936. Chapin-Newberry finished the regular season undefeated and then swept the state tournament in Sumter to win the state championship, becoming the first Newberry-based team to be South Carolina champions. They were the first unbeaten team to make the World Series since 1963.
