CHARLESTON, S.C. (WOLO)–Solicitor Scarlett Wilson says the state will seek the death penalty against Dylann Roof for the killings at Mother Emanuel AME church earlier this summer. Wilson says Roof‘s punishment should fit the severity of the crime. “This was the ultimate crime and justice from our state calls for the ultimate punishment” In court documents filed on Thursday…prosecutors say they will pursue the death penalty against Dylann Roof…citing that more than two people were killed and others lives were put at risk when he opened fire at Mother Emanuel AME church. Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson says she discussed the decision with several of the victims’ families, whose personal views each differed on the proper punishment, but ultimately she says they respected her decision to seek justice through execution if roof is convicted. “We all agree that forgiveness can be an important part in the healing process but know that forgiveness does not mean forgoing consequences, even severe consequences” Prosecutors say on the night of June 17th Roof entered Mother Emanuel AME church during a bible study…after an hour of attending the meeting…officials say he then shot and killed 9 innocent churchgoers. Arrested in Shelby, North Carolina hours after the shooting…Roof now faces 13 state charges including 9 murder charges. In addition he also faces more than 30 federal hate crime and weapons charges. Federal prosecutors have not said whether or not they will also seek the death penalty. Dylann Roof‘s trial date is set for next July. In the meantime, Roof remains in North Charleston in isolation at the Charleston County Detention Center.
