COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Ed Madden and Bert Easter say the day they were legally married is one they’ll never forget. According to Madden,”We were so stunned that it was actually happening, it was right before Thanksgiving I mean what perfect timing to just be grateful that it’s finally legal and possible.” Now, Kentucky residents, William Smith Jr. and James Yates also have something to be grateful. The couple was issued a marriage license on their sixth attempt after Clerk of Court Kim Davis refused to issue a license to the same-sex couple despite federal order. Long time activists for marriage equality, Easter and Madden say that while they’re not surprised by Davis’ actions, it’s still concerning. “Any time there’s a big step forward, there’s going to be a backlash or a mis-step,” says Easter. Madden tells ABC Columbia,”She is not fulfilling the duties of her office, that’s the fundamental issue. Her individual faith is not the issue, the issue is, she’s a public servant who swore an oath of office and she is not only disobeying the law she is not fulfilling the terms of her office.” While marriage equality is a step in the right direction, both say there are many other battles on the horizon. “Job protection, employment non-discrimination and the treatment of gay and lesbian youth whether it’s bullying or the treatment of transgender. There’s a lot of work still to go,” says Madden.
