No. 6 Clemson Earns 1-1 Draw vs. No. 11 Coastal Carolina
CLEMSON, S.C. — The sixth-ranked Clemson men‘s soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with No. 11 Coastal Carolina Monday night at Historic Riggs Field. The match went to two golden goal overtime sessions, but neither team found the back of the net. Clemson‘s record is 3-0-1 on the season after tonight‘s result. Junior Austen Burnikel scored Clemson‘s only goal of the night in the 27th minute off assists from junior Aaron Jones and sophomore Saul Chinchilla. Burnikel took a pass around the six yard mark and fired a low shot into the corner of the goal. Coastal Carolina scored the equalizer in the 76th minute, Bryce Follensbee scored his second of the season. Clemson had several great chances during the overtime periods, but ultimately couldn‘t score. Senior T.J. Casner took a total of five shots in the match, including two shots during overtime that just missed the mark. “I thought that our response in the second half was good and, in particular, I thought we went for it in overtime,” head coach Mike Noonan said. “They‘re a good team, it‘s a difficult style to have to play against.” As a team, Clemson out-shot Coastal Carolina 19-10. The Tigers held the advantage in corner kicks 7-3 as well. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell saved two shots in a full 110 minutes of action, his record is now 3-0-1 on the season. Tonight‘s match was the end of a four match homestand to start the season for Clemson. The Tigers next take the field on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2013 national champion Notre Dame. Clemson is home next on Friday, Sept. 18 vs. Duke.
