Teen struck and killed at dangerous Sumter crossing
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 17-year-old woman has been struck and killed by a car on a stretch of highway in Sumter with a sign warning pedestrians not to cross.
Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock told media outlets that Terricia Butler was wearing dark clothes as she tried to cross the four-lane U.S. Highway 76 bypass around 8 p.m. Saturday.
Bullock says the stretch of highway has been so dangerous in the past a sign was put up warning people not to cross.
Troopers say the driver who struck Butler was not hurt and won’t be charged in the incident.
