Court reconvenes in Walter Scott case, still no bond decision

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – After a three-hour bond hearing Thursday, court was once again called into a surprise session Friday morning. Slager spoke briefly and told the judge that if given the chance, he will obey all the requirements set forth by the court if he is allowed to be released on bond. He also said he wanted to see his newborn son. Judge Clifton Newman said Friday he will make his decision “as expeditiously as possible.” On Thursday, Judge Newman said he would need time to weigh all the evidence presented before he would make a decision on bond for former North Charleston officer Michael Slager. The National Action Network held a press conference Wednesday to announce their intention to protest if Slager is released. Court officers also discussed when Slager’s case could be heard. Prosecutors said late 2016, while defense attorneys said they hoped to go to court as early as Spring 2016. The judge answered by setting a hard deadline for 60 days after he sets bail.
