Residents warned of check scam

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) — Richland County residents are being warned about an individual posing as an official with the Sheriff’s Department. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says someone is calling unsuspecting victims telling them they will be arrested for writing fraudulent checks. The suspect then allegedly places a three-way call to the Richland County Sheriff‘s Department headquarters requesting the arrest of the victim on fraudulent check charges, officials say. The call continues with the victim after the suspect hangs up from the Sheriff’s Department. The victim is then given directions on how to wire money to the suspect in an attempt to steal the victim‘s money, authorities say.
