Man killed in hit-and-run while in road awaiting help

RIDGEWAY, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 23-year-old man was struck and killed by a car whose driver stopped only briefly as another driver who hit the man earlier was seeking help.

Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey told media outlets that Debante Middleton was in the road after being hit when he was struck and killed by another vehicle around 6:45 a.m. Thursday.

Ramsey says the first driver who hit Middleton spoke to him and was calling 911 when the second car hit him. Investigators say the second driver stopped briefly before driving off.

Troopers say they’re looking for a dark compact car that likely has damage to the front bumper and headlight.

The South Carolina Highway patrol says the first driver has not been charged.
