Man dies when car is hit by train in Gaffney
GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — A man has died when his car was struck by a train at a railroad crossing in Gaffney. Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a statement that the wreck happened around 6 a.m. Tuesday. Fowler says the victim was 77-year-old John W. Mikel of Gaffney. The coroner says Mikel was alone in the car. Fowler says Mikel’s car ran off the road at the crossing and became stuck. Mikel died at the scene. Fowler says the Norfolk Southern train with three engines and 45 cars was headed to Greenville from Linwood, North Carolina. Neither the engineer nor the conductor was hurt. An autopsy is planned Wednesday.
